Signs of Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea happens when your airway repeatedly narrows or closes while you sleep. Talk to us or your physician if you or your partner notice:
- Loud, frequent snoring
- Pauses in breathing, or choking or gasping during sleep
- Feeling tired during the day even after a full night’s sleep
- Morning headaches or a dry mouth when you wake up
- Trouble concentrating or feeling irritable
How Oral Appliance Therapy Treats Sleep Apnea
An oral appliance is a custom-made device, similar to a sports mouth guard or a retainer, that you wear while you sleep. It gently holds your lower jaw slightly forward to help keep your airway open, which can reduce snoring and sleep apnea.
Many patients find an oral appliance easier to live with than a CPAP machine. It’s quiet, needs no electricity and is small enough to travel with.
Why Sleep Apnea Treatment Matters
Sleep apnea affects much more than your sleep. Left untreated, it is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and daytime sleepiness that can make driving unsafe.
“Sleep apnea affects so many people who don’t realize how much it’s impacting their health and daily life,” says Dr. Khan. “Being able to offer a solution chairside, and to collaborate directly with our patients’ physicians, means we can catch and treat something that often goes overlooked.”
Working With Your Physician
Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. If you haven’t been diagnosed, we can talk with you about your symptoms and help you take the next step with your physician. Once you have a diagnosis, Dr. Khan works with your physician to decide whether an oral appliance is right for you and to check how well it’s working.

Sleep Apnea Treatment FAQs
Can a dentist treat sleep apnea?
Dentists trained in dental sleep medicine can treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliances, working with your physician, who makes the diagnosis.
Is an oral appliance as good as CPAP?
CPAP works very well when it’s used every night. Oral appliances are an effective option for many people, especially those with mild to moderate sleep apnea or who can’t tolerate CPAP. Your physician and Dr. Khan will help you decide.
Will an oral appliance stop my snoring?
For many people, an oral appliance reduces or stops snoring. Because snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, it’s important to be evaluated before treating snoring alone.
Do I need a sleep study first?
Yes. Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study, before it’s treated with an oral appliance.
Is a sleep apnea appliance the same as a night guard?
No. A night guard protects your teeth from grinding. A sleep apnea appliance is designed to hold your jaw forward to help keep your airway open.
