Common Dental Emergencies

Call us right away if you have:

  • A severe or throbbing toothache
  • A cracked, chipped or broken tooth
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or loosened
  • Swelling in your gums, face or jaw
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth
  • An injury to your mouth from sports or a fall

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have swelling that is spreading or affecting your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won’t stop, a possible broken jaw, or a head injury. For other urgent dental problems, call our office.

What to Do Until You See Us

  • Toothache. Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove anything caught between your teeth. A cold compress on your cheek can ease swelling. Don’t put aspirin directly on your gums.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth. Pick it up by the top (the crown), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. Try to put it back in its socket, or keep it in a cup of milk, and call us right away. Acting quickly gives the best chance of saving it.
  • Knocked-out baby tooth. Don’t try to put it back in. Call us so we can check your child’s mouth.
  • Broken or chipped tooth. Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Lost filling or crown. Keep the crown and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.
  • Swelling. Call us promptly. Swelling can be a sign of infection that needs treatment.

Emergency Dental Care After Hours

Our phone line is answered 24/7, so you can call any time to ask for an emergency visit. Our office is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm, and Tuesday from 9 am to 2 pm. For severe swelling, bleeding that won’t stop or a serious injury, go to the nearest emergency room.
