What is a comprehensive exam and composite filling?

A comprehensive dental exam is an extensive evaluation of your entire oral health, going beyond a routine check-up to include a thorough examination, dental X-rays, a detailed assessment of teeth and gums, and screenings for issues like oral cancer. It serves to establish a baseline of your oral health, detect problems early, and create personalized care plans to improve your overall well-being.
What to expect during a comprehensive exam:
  • Medical and Dental History: Your dentist will discuss your overall health, including any medications, and your dental history.
  • Oral Cancer Screening: A visual and physical exam of your lips, tongue, neck, and gums to check for abnormalities.
  • Dental X-rays: Diagnostic X-rays may be taken to view issues not visible to the naked eye, such as cavities and issues below the gum line.
  • Teeth and Gums Examination: A detailed assessment of your teeth and gums for signs of decay, gum disease, and other conditions.
  • Bite and Jaw Evaluation: The dentist will check how your teeth fit together and examine the joints and muscles of your jaw.
  • Oral Hygiene and Risk Assessment: Your oral hygiene habits will be assessed, and you may receive instructions on proper cleaning techniques for teeth and dentures.
  • Treatment Planning: The findings from the exam will be discussed with you to create a personalized plan for future preventive and restorative dental care
Composite filling is a white dental restorative material used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the aesthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material. Dental restoration also refers to the replacement of missing tooth structure that is supported by dental implants.

Procedure

Composite fillings are usually placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove decay as necessary. The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new filling is placed. If the decay was near the nerve of the tooth, a special medication will be applied for added protection. The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function. It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold when composite fillings are first placed, however this will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling. You will be given care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new fillings.
